Emerging Technologies

hello!
Well, we can completed our last session for COM 435 and today I saw some very interesting emerging technologies that I enjoyed.

First I would like to talk about my emerging technology that I presented on. It is the GeoLife 2.0. Geo Life is a GPS data driven networking site. The really cool thing about it is that its just like Facebook, except everywhere you go and talk about your point of interest, is how you network with people. For example: If i was into working out and cycling classes and I was new to a city, I would log onto my Geo Life account and look at other members and where they go and take cycling courses in that city. I can ask them questions and it can help boost my networking site. Next thing you know, you are friends with that person and have a new cycling buddy!
You have the option of not wanting to respond, and you also have the option to monitor who can see where you go, just like Facebook's privacy settings. This is a really good opportunity to learn your way around a new city in a matter of seconds. This technology is only emerging and is not available for the public yet. It only as about 100 participants who are still working out the kinks in it, and so far they have collected over 7 million GPS points in China, where the technology is being tested.

I would also like to comment on the technologies that I saw today when observing my peers. The Amprius' Silicon Nanowire Anodes in lithium-ion batteries was really interesting to me. It is a way for batteries to be run off of silicon which lasts a lot longer than the regular batteries. It took scientists awhile to figure out how to apply this as a battery because the silicon could break, but they figured out they would use wires to use as the battery. This is great for people like me who are always using their iPod and get annoyed when it runs out of batteries when i need it the most! Another interesting technology I saw was the social desktop. The way that society is forming, it is essential the we find new ways to access information with out having to use the internet. In Tracey Todd's presentation, she explained how the social desktop has URL's already embedded into the system so you can open your ichat, Facebook, email, etc. all on your social desktop. The only issue I can see with this is information overload and the capacity at which your computer can hold all of that information with out crashing! It sounds really cool though. I would def. use it, if it was possible to have on my computer right now.
I enjoyed blogging this semester in COM 435 and have learned a great amount about the technologies around me.

NuFace Device

Hello everyone! Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving break! I know mine was relaxing, but only for 2 days! Other than that, I was doing school work and preparing for my graduation which is only 3 weeks away!

Anyway...back on the topic of beauty, my favorite, NuFace is a new facial toner. I know that I have a few creams in my drawer that all say that they dramatically help the tone of your face, evening it out. I honestly don't really see how peoples skin can have an uneven skin tone, but according to dermatologists, it does!

NuFace uses a gentle low-level current to boost aging muscles. The electrical impulses rehabilitate the muscles and improve circulation, texture, tone and fine lines. It does this by increasing blood flow and accelerates cell turnover, which stimulates collagen and reduces the signs of aging. Don't all woman want this?! I mean, if you can post pone looking old in the future, I am all for it!

They great thing about this is that it offers professional results in your own home. It only takes five minutes to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and fix your tone! If you end up using it regularly it helps strengthen the muscles in your face and rejuvenates your complexion.

As usual, with any innovative beauty product that actually works, it is pricey. You can read about NuFace Here.

Clarisonic Skin Care System

When you wash your face with your hands, do you feel as if it actually washed properly? Or when you use a toner afterwards, are you wiping away your makeup, dirt, etc?

If you feel this way, this Clarisonic Skin Care System is a deep facial cleanser. It is a brush that is clinically proven to be more than twice effective than just washing your face with your hands. The outer brush and the inner brush create a deep cleansing zone, which makes the pores release dirt, oil, and other gross things. The brush moves back and forth more than 300 movements per second to be able to do this.

It can remove makeup, and increases product absorption AND improves the look of blemishes, dryness, pores, and aging. It says that one study revealed that after just four weeks of using this, over 80 percent of the people notices healthier looking skin and 94 percent said that had softer skin.. 70 percent said they had smaller pores.

The reason why I am writing about this is because I believe that everyone should feel great about themselves no matter what. I always feel as if when I wash my face with my hands that I am adding bacteria to my face because I am rubbing my hands all over it, although there is soap involved. I am going to look into this brush more, and hopefully I will have it in my hands very soon!

Metropolis Technology S-Nano Ionic Digital Wet/Dry Flat Iron

As I have posted about before, hair products are a huge part of my life. Being on TV and online appearances via skype, I am constantly having to have my hair done. I cant just roll out of bed, and have my hair look as miraculous as I want it it! ( I wish it was that easy) It takes me a long time to blow dry, and then straighten my hair or curl it, about on average, an hour and a half long.

This new wet/dry iron is a hair straightener! The reason why it is so innovative is because the Metropolis S-Nano Silver Ionic Digital Wet and Dry Flat Iron, lets you skip the blow drying process and straighten your towel-dried hair. The plates on the iron contain air vents which release moisture. The Ionic technologies created hair that is shinier, smoother and leave you split end-free.

I do not own this very own product, but I guarantee you I will be asking for it for Christmas! It it can cut the time of doing my hair, then I am all for it! It is a little pricey. There are some websites out there that have this straightener on sale for around 100 dollars, but what I have seen for the most part is around $200.00

You can purchase this item on this website, which is where I found them to be discounted!

Oscar Blandi Colore Pen

So, Ive been talking to my mom about new beauty technologies and if she has tried anything recently. Not to my surprise, she said that she has. Woman when they are older are concerned about grey in their hair and how it always seems to show the most around the ears and hair line.

As many woman know, coloring your hair is very time consuming and expensive when done well and professionally. My mom told me about this color pen which touches your roots up and conceals strands of gray hair. The reason why this is so innovative is because it doesnt use ammonia or peroxide. It also is strong enough to stick to your hair instantly, but gentle enough that it wont stain your hair. It comes out in the shower, and can sustain a little drizzle of rain, if it happens to do so when you are outside.

Oscar Blandi is the mastermind behind this. He has one of the most trendy salons in New York City. This color pen he has created has sold all across the country, and to my surprise, there are a few of them in my house at home! It is very inexpensive. Around $23.00. You can buy this product and other products at amazon.com or sephora.com

The reason why I believe this product is innovative and successful is not only because my mother uses it, but also because it is a very creative technology! To get my hair colored, it costs about $200.00. This doesn't even include a haircut and style. With this pen costing only around $23.00, it can allow people to save some extra money every month.

I find this product to be very creative and I think that it is a great creation in the beauty world for people who color their hair, but are looking for an inexpensive route every other month!

T3 Bespoke Featherweight

Are you tired of the time and effort it takes into blow drying your hair? After you've blow dried it, do you have to use a hair straightener in order to get all the frizz out to make it look shinny and sleek? Well, if you are tired of all of these things and much more, then this new innovative beauty product is right for you!

I have long thick hair, so I am always wanting to have perfect looking hair, but dread the blow drying process. When I found out about this new blow drying, the T3 Bespoke Featherweight, I had to go out and buy one! It honestly works. It has cut my blow drying experience in half and I no longer have to use my hair straightener to make it less frizzy.

It won Allure Magazines Prestigous Best of Beauty Award. It has two patented features:
  • The Flawless™ technology that uses Tourmaline negative ions to break down water molecules into tiny droplets for faster evaporation.
  • The softAire™ flow system that features infrared energy to heat hair — not air — allowing 60 percent faster performance than other hairdryers.
The best thing about this product is that it literally weighs less than a can of soda. it is so light and doesn't hurt your arm or give you a head ache. It is a little pricey ladies and gents (200.000 USD), but for all that it does, its worth your bucks! I promise :)

Tanda Professional Skincare System

The Tanda Professional Skincare System is for the use of acne and anti-aging. This particular skin care system is innovative because it features two treatment heads that deliver powerful resulrs from the use of breakthrough LED technology.
The Clear Acne Light Therapy Treatment Head uses blue LED light that effectively kills the acne-causing bacteria which clogs pores, and it also treats current blemishes and prevents breakouts. In one study, ninety-percent of the people said that it helped existing acne and helped prevent future breakouts.
The Regenerate Anti-Aging Light Therapy Treatment Head uses red LED light to helps improve skin texture, color, and tone while diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. In a study, ninety-two percent of the people said that their skin felt more rejuvenated and smooth.
The reason why these two different (red/blue) light therapies work is because when colors are perceived, the eye is detecting bands of wavelengths within the visible light. Humans can see visible light from violent through red. This is why the blue and red are used for different aspects on the skin.
You can buy Tanda Professional Skin Care Systems online.

I personally think that this is a great way to make your skin feel good and for you to feel better about your skin. Like most things in life- it is expensive, but worth your bucks if you look at the percentage that it has worked on.

Silk'n SensEpil

So, as usual I am sitting here, reading over the new technologies that occurring in the 'beauty' world. The Silk'n SensEpil is a long-term hair removal treatment, and the even better part is, is that its over the counter so you can do it at home!!!
This is the only FDA- approved over-the-counter device, which just makes it that much better. It uses Home Pulsed Light technology to remove unwanted hair and it even has a built-in safety sensor to ensure that the appropriate skin types use it. The reason why this technology is so well is because after two to four sessions, the results are just as comparable to professional procedures. If you were to want to remove hair on your legs, the full treatment would only take about thirty minutes.
I'm sure you are thinking; "Wow, this is great, but it probably costs a lot of money!"
Well, to your advantage, the machine costs $499.00 with a $50.00 refill cartridge. This price is a lot better considering the fact that a professional hair removal procedure at an office costs between $200- $500 a session.
It is precaution ed that dark-skinned woman do not use this new technology because it can cause blistering and pigmentation changes in the skin.
The Silk'n SensEpil has received 5 stars and I can tell you that when I have the money to buy stuff like this, you will definitely find this in my bathroom!

Innovative new tools for skin care

The GlowFusion Air Glow Gun is a self tanning kit that you can do at home. It has an "air glow gun" which is the first and only at home airbrush system on the market today. The mist is a micro- nutrient technology that distributes vitamins and nutrients to the skin and a cocoa complex adds anti-aging properties and antioxidant protection.

The reason why this is so good is because it is streak-free. It also elements the concerns with cancer that are associated when using an actual tanning bed or going out in the sun. The other advantage to using this at home kit is that it dries fast and lasts up to two weeks with out any fading.

The reason why I wanted to mention this tanning method is because so many woman across the country spend so much money and time on tanning in tanning beds or laying out in the sun without protection to get that "glow." The risks that come with tanning at a salon with UV lights, is that it can cause cancer. A friend of mine from high school has skin cancer now because she used to go tanning three times a week in a tanning bed all through out high school and she now has skin cancer on her back. She had to get it removed, but she now has scars and has to get checked every 3 months.

The new technology of sunless tanning is a great idea. I know that at One Minute Tan near Chauncey here at Purdue, you can get sunless tanning for only 36 dollars for two tans. Each of them last up to 2 weeks, and its a great way to look great, without having to worry about getting cancer. I think that the at home kit is even better! If you can still have the same look without having to get in your car and go somewhere to have this tanning procedure done, then its all worth it. I know that many companies like Dove or L'Oreal have sunless tanning lotions that you can apply to your body. They are simply lotions with a tint of self tanning applied to them. I think its great that people can have options for wanting to look bronzed and tanned all year around, with out having the concerns about UV lights and skin cancer.

Injectables

Along with laser treatments and radio energy therapies, a different technology used are injectables. Injectables consist of BOTOX cosmetics and injectable fillers. Most people use these to help with signs of aging. The majority of people use these fillers on their face but some people can use of their hands, etc. as I mentioned with the radio energy therapies.
Have you ever looked at someones face and said "Oh my God, what did they do to it?" or " WOW, that person definitely had implants done to their lips." Well, these BOTOX and injectables are why some peoples faces look 'perfected' or a little too perfected that they look almost fake or like 'Cat Woman.' If you don't know who cat woman is, here is a link of who she is:
http://www.funnypictures.net.au/images/worst-plastic-surgery-in-the-world-cat-woman1.jpg

Cat Woman is obviously an extreme to what plastic surgery can do to your face and how you can become addicted but if you look at her lips and how her skin is extremely firm, you can tell that BOTOX and injectables were done to her face. I personally think that this is very sad that someone has become so addicted that they ruin their face like this.

I do believe that these type of technologies are good for the human culture but I do have a concern for the addiction that comes along with it. These procedures are not cheap and someone can become in serious debt if they don't have the right money to afford it.

If you take a look at this link:
http://www.salon.com/mwt/broadsheet/2007/08/16/cosmetic_democracy/index.html
it talks about how people are going out of their way to get hefty loans and certain health insurances because they want plastic surgery so badly or enough opt out of their health insurance so that they can finance their surgery even better. It is a very interesting article and I plan on learning more about BOTOX and injectables with the factor of debt.

Radio Energy Therapies

So, as usual, I have been reading about the new technologies in the beauty industry. I am completely fascinated with the new technologies that have occurred over the past few years that are non-invasive surgeries.

Something that I have been reading up on is 'Radio Energy Therapies.' One of the new technologies is the Thermacool non surgical face lift by 'Thermage.' This company uses the new technology of radio energy to give someone a face lift. It is approved by the FDA and in just one treatment you look longer by reducing wrinkles, etc. Another technology introduced is the Hands by Thermage which tightens the skin in your hands. The reason why they wanted to do this for the hands is because over time, your hands get worn out. You use them all day long, typing, exercising, writing, picking things up, etc. So, by using a Capacitive Radio frequency beam, it uses heat to get to the deepest layer on your skin to provide long lasting improvement. One of the reasons why people use this hand procedure is because it only requires one visit, unlike laser treatments. It is a one time, non surgical procedure.

Radio energy therapies are used in traditional Chinese medicine practices. It China, they use this therapy to perform a traditional massage. They use it to influence the acupoints on the body to remove blockages and promote free flow throughout the body.

I mean, if I was given the opportunity to have a radio energy based massage I would definitely want to do it. Having someone not touch your body, but have the same effect and feel afterwards, or an even better feeling of relaxation, would be cool to experience. I think its really neat that these non-invasive procedures can happen, especially with the massages you can receive. As for the same with lasers, I find it fascinating that you can have treatments like this to remove or tighten something on your body that you do not like, and there is no in-patient procedure. I really am curious to see where these technologies are going.

The Technology of Beauty- Laser treatments

So, it took me awhile to figure out what exactly I wanted to blog about, but it came down to something that I am vary passionate about; Health/Beauty Products.
Woman and some men are always wanting to look younger and feel better about themselves as they age. You hear about more and more people going under the knife to make themselves look younger, but now all you need to do is get laser treatment. It is so incredible to me that a light put on your face or on a mark on your body can make you look younger, or be removed in a matter of minutes. And the most incredible thing about this all is that it doesn't involve any form of knife being cut into your skin.
There are different type of lasers such as the 'Fraxel Laser' which can build up your collagen by making it tighter, reducing the appearance of wrinkles, age spots, sun spots, etc. There is also the 'Titan Laser,' which is a face lift done by a laser. It uses light energy to target the dermis where collagen forms directly beneath the surface of the epidermis. It causes new collagen growth and helps tighten and firm the exciting collagen. Another form of laser treatment that blows my mind is the 'Pearl Fractional Laser." This laser is used for photo-aging. It is used for immediate and long term use by using a wavelength of light.
There are many different other forms for laser treatments but these three to me stand out. When you think about wanting to look younger and how about twenty years ago that was never an option, you can no just go get a light put on you to have whatever you want it to do! This technology to me is just amazing. The fact that people can go do a simple procedure such as these and go back to their everyday life as if nothing happened, is mind boggling. Granted- its expensive, but the fact that we have these procedures today is pretty cool to me. I question where laser treatments will be in ten years from now. It will definitely be around still, but maybe hospitals will use it more to do surgery's without using an actual knife. We will have to see.....
